“Are you kidding me?!” Tori exclaims.

“Tori,” I sigh.

“He asked you out and you turned him down?” she questions in bewilderment.

“Lower your voice, Victoria,” I warn.

We’re currently in the employee lounge or break room so to say. I came down to the floor for some coffee and to see my best friend before she stormed up to the first floor to meet me.

“Why did you say no?” Tori asks softly this time.

“Technically, he didn’t say the words, will you be my girlfriend?” I point out.

“But he implied it and you turned him down.”

“Yes, I said no, okay? Because it’s Kyle. Our boss. Can you imagine me being his girlfriend?”

“Of course, I can, babe. Question is, why can’t you?”

“Tori, let’s be real. Kyle’s and I are from different worlds. I’m his assistant and I’m ok being just that. Besides, I like my simple life. All the attention that would come with dating him wouldn’t be worth the three months it would probably last.”

She gasps.

“You did not just say that.”

“Come on Victoria. We both know that Kyle is a playboy. He can do these things and bounce back but I’m barely getting by and can’t afford to lose my job when shit hits the fan. I don’t think I want to deal with the consequences of dating him. I’ll probably lose all my privacy and I’m not ready for that to happen. And I can already hear the rumors. I’m not ready to be labeled a gold digger and a slut.”

“Since when have you cared about what other people think?” Tori questions.

“Let’s be real, Tori. Everybody cares about other people’s opinions of them to some extent. A relationship with Kyle is terrifying,” I say sincerely.

Tori’s eyes soften.

“It doesn’t have to be. You could take things slow. You’re great at casual flings and relationships.”

I give her a look. We haven’t even talked about Tyler yet.

“Problem is, if I ever started anything with Kyle, it would be anything but casual.”

I like him too much. That’s the scary part.

“Fine, I give up. Maybe it’s better this way,” Tori concedes.

I smile as I take a sip of the coffee. Then the conversation turns serious again when I tell her what happened with Tyler. Tori’s promising bloody murder when we’re interrupted by one of our co-workers.

“Hey, Tori. We might have to pull a few all-nighters. Just got back from a meeting with Mr. Matthews. He said we have to get the prototype submitted by Christmas Eve,” Morris, a software engineer that works with Tori says to her bitterly.

Her eyes widen.

“What? I thought we would have until after New Year’s. Even into February if I’m being honest?” Tori questions.

“He wants to do things on an accelerated timeline,” Morris says through gritted teeth.

I’m appalled. I understand that he’s a grumpy asshole with no love for Christmas but making people work on Christmas Eve is criminal.

“I’ll talk to him,” I tell them before placing my coffee cup on the counter and walking out of the room.

There’s a burning feeling in my chest that I’ve come to associate as anger when it comes to Kyle.
